#13 - Knotted Physio - Resistance Bands: One of the Most Useful Fitness Tools You Can Own
Hello Everyone and welcome back to the Knotted Physio Blog! I hope you all are doing well and finding ways to stay active and healthy. I also wanted to say thank you again for continuing to support these posts and share them with others. It has been so fun hearing from many of you and learning what topics you enjoy reading about most!
Today, I wanted to talk about one of the simplest, most affordable and honestly one of the most useful exercise tools that I think people can own. Resistance bands.
Now, I know what some of you are probably thinking already. “Can those little rubber bands actually do anything?” I hear that all the time! Most people think they need huge complicated gym equipment to get stronger, but that really is not always the case.
Matter of fact, I use resistance bands all the time in physical therapy exercises because they are versatile, portable and easy to adjust for different fitness levels. Whether you are just starting an exercise program, recovering from an injury or trying to stay active as you get older, resistance bands can be an excellent tool.
One thing that I really like about them is how easy they are on the joints compared to some heavier gym equipment. The resistance increases gradually as the band stretches, which tends to feel smoother for many people with shoulder, knee or back discomfort.
I can’t tell you how many patients I’ve had over the years who were intimidated by gyms or large exercise machines, but felt comfortable starting with resistance bands at home. Sometimes removing that intimidation factor is half the battle.
And honestly, they travel really well too. You can throw them in a suitcase, keep them in a drawer or even take them outside and exercise in the fresh air. That is a lot harder to do with a giant weight machine!
One of the biggest mistakes that I see people make as they get older is they stop doing strengthening exercises altogether because they think they have to lift extremely heavy weights to benefit. But maintaining strength is incredibly important as we age. Strength helps with balance, joint support, posture and even everyday activities like climbing stairs, carrying groceries and getting up from the floor.
Resistance bands are also great because they allow you to work multiple muscle groups in many different directions. You can work shoulders, arms, hips, legs, posture muscles and core strength all with one small set of bands.
I actually started appreciating resistance bands even more during the COVID shutdown period when gyms were closed. So many people suddenly realized they needed simple equipment they could use at home. And you know what? A lot of them discovered they could still get a really good workout without fancy machines.
Another thing that I personally like is that bands are easy to adjust. If one color feels too easy, you move up to the next resistance level. That gradual progression is really important because the body adapts over time.
Now, are resistance bands the answer to everything? Of course not. But for flexibility, strengthening, warm ups, mobility work and general fitness, they are one of the most practical tools out there in my opinion.
One thing I would encourage is focusing on controlled movement instead of just pulling the bands as fast as possible. Slow controlled exercises with good posture usually work much better than rushing through repetitions.
And please remember this too, soreness is not always the goal. I think social media sometimes gives people the impression that if they are not completely exhausted afterwards, the workout did not count. Consistency matters much more than destroying yourself once a week.
I had a patient one time who started using resistance bands for simple shoulder and posture exercises just a few minutes each day. Several weeks later she came back and said not only did her shoulders feel stronger, but she was noticing less neck tension and better posture while working at the computer. Sometimes small consistent habits really do add up.
So if you have been looking for a simple way to start exercising at home, improve strength or add variety to your workouts, resistance bands may be worth looking into. They are affordable, beginner friendly and surprisingly effective when used consistently.
Well guys, I hope this gave you a little better understanding of why resistance bands have become so popular and why they can be such a useful addition to a healthy lifestyle.
If you found this helpful, be sure to share it with someone who has been wanting to get started exercising but did not know where to begin!
