#15 - Knotted Physio - Why Yoga Has Become So Popular (And Why It Actually Works)

Hello Everyone and welcome back to the Knotted Physio Blog! I hope you all are doing well and finding some time to enjoy the beautiful outdoors lately. First off, I wanted to say thank you again for continuing to read and support these posts. It has been wonderful hearing from so many of you and learning about the activities that help keep you active and healthy!

Today, I wanted to talk about something that honestly does not get enough credit when it comes to our health and wellness. Spending time outdoors.

Now, I know this may sound simple, but have you ever noticed how much better you feel after spending a little time outside? Maybe you went for a walk, worked in the garden, sat by the water or just enjoyed a little sunshine on your face. There is just something about being outdoors that seems to reset the body and mind a little bit.

And interestingly enough, there is actually research to support that feeling.

One of the biggest things being outdoors seems to help with is stress reduction. Our lives have become incredibly busy and overstimulated. Phones constantly buzzing, emails, social media, news and screens everywhere. It can feel like our brains never truly shut off.

But when people spend time outdoors, especially in nature, stress levels often decrease. Heart rate can slow down, muscles relax and people tend to breathe a little deeper without even realizing it.

I have noticed this myself after particularly stressful days. Sometimes just taking a short walk outside completely changes my mood and energy level. It is almost like the body finally gets a chance to exhale.

Another huge benefit of being outdoors is movement. Most outdoor activities naturally encourage us to move more. Walking trails, gardening, hiking, fishing, kayaking, playing with kids or even doing yard work all get the body moving.

And movement is so important for joint health, circulation, strength and overall wellness. Our bodies were designed to move, not sit in one position all day long staring at screens.

One thing that I think people underestimate is how much sunlight can impact our health too. Sunlight helps our bodies produce vitamin D which plays an important role in bone health, immune function and overall wellness.

Now, of course we still need to be smart about sun exposure and protect our skin, but moderate sunlight exposure can absolutely be beneficial.

Another interesting thing that I have seen over the years is how much being outdoors seems to help mental health. People often report feeling calmer, happier and more refreshed after spending time outside. Even children seem to behave differently after getting outside and burning off energy.

I had a patient several years ago who was going through a particularly stressful season of life. One of the things we talked about was simply trying to spend a little more time outdoors walking each day. Several weeks later she came back and said those walks had become one of the best parts of her day. Not because they were intense exercise, but because they gave her time to think, breathe and decompress.

Sometimes the simplest habits really do make the biggest difference.

And honestly, outdoor activity does not have to be complicated. I think social media sometimes makes it look like you need to climb mountains or go on huge adventures to “count.” But sitting on the porch, taking a short walk through the neighborhood or working in the flower beds all count too.

One thing I really love about outdoor activity is that it tends to feel less like exercise for many people. When movement feels enjoyable, people are much more likely to stay consistent with it.

That consistency is what really matters in the long run.

Now, this does not mean being outdoors magically solves every problem. But I truly believe many of us would benefit physically and mentally from spending a little less time indoors and a little more time outside moving our bodies and enjoying nature.

Sometimes the body and mind simply need a reset.

So if you have been feeling stressed, stiff, tired or mentally drained lately, maybe try stepping outside for a little while. You might be surprised by how much better you feel afterwards.

Well guys, I hope this encouraged you to spend a little more time outdoors and reminded you that health does not always have to be complicated.

If you enjoyed this post, be sure to share it with someone who may need a reminder to unplug and get outside for awhile!

As always, Thanks for reading and Go enjoy the outdoors!
