#9 - Knotted Physio - Mindset

Hi! Welcome to the Knotted Physio Blog, Post 9!  My Gosh, we are cruising right along, and I hope you are truly finding the information provided helpful!  As always, this blog is intended to be a great resource to keep us active and healthy to enjoy the outdoors. In today’s post, I wanted to dive a little deeper into how our mindset plays a huge role in our overall well being.

During these days and times, it is becoming more and more evident that emotions play a huge role in our everyday lives. With so many reports, social media posts, and news broadcasts that include polarizing content, peoples reactions from these are emotionally driven. This same concept applies to our everyday choices and decisions that we make, and health is no different.

There are many studies in the psychology world that show changes in outcomes according to expectations.  For example, when people were given a placebo medication and told it was going to cause them to feel better, most of the time, the subjects in this study generally felt better.  This same placebo was given to subjects and they were told they were going to feel bad.  Guess what, they reported that they felt bad.  Now, I am over simplifying this particular study, but the research exists and demonstrates that our mindset is a huge factor into our outcomes.

I’m sure that you have come across those individuals who are always sick, nothing ever goes right, life is doom and gloom.  Right? Matter of fact, I bet you have someone’s name in mind.  If you take a look back and see what their mindset is, you can just about predict the next thing that is going to be wrong with them.

Now, this is not to pick on people who have medical conditions. We know those exist and are devastating and they are making it up.  That is not the case; it is just the opposite. My guess is you also know someone who was diagnosed with a life threatening illness, but they miraculously recovered.  Did you look at their emotional state of being?  I bet they were a fighter and had such optimism that you thought they were crazy!

So, what’s your point Jenny? My point is, if you want to be able to get out and enjoy the outdoors, you have to set your mind to it.  A lot of times, when you first think about it, your desire seems so far away that you think you may never reach it, but if you shift your way of thinking slightly, you can break that goal and desire into steps that are small enough, they are achievable.  This way you know the steps that you have to take to get there.

With this, we need to decide on our what.  What is it that we want to be able to do? Also Why do you want to do this? You need to be very specific.  For example, I want to be able to scuba dive. My why is because I find the under water world so fascinating and beautiful. For me, there are several limitations as to why I am not able to do it., Right now it is primarily time.  I think that I am physically fit enough to be able to scuba dive, but I need the time to be able to go and take lessons and learn all of the rules so that I know how to do it properly and not get injured.

Once I finally get myself into scuba lessons, my next step is do I have the strength and flexibility to even be able to get into a wet suit.  Those things are tight and may be a challenge to even be able to get into it.  So, I may have to work on my flexibility and strength so that I can the suit on.  The next thing that I need to consider is how heavy are the tanks and gear?  Can I lift and carry it? And so on and so forth…

When you have established all of the obstacles that stop you from achieving your goal, you can set the small steps that lead you to the outcome you want.  This is where mindset is going to be so important.  Don’t get overwhelmed by all the steps, look at the first one and think about reaching that step and have the mindset that it is doable.  Once you reach that first goal, you will feel accomplished.  This reinforces that fact that yes, you can do it and helps to build momentum and you’ll soon be on your way to your destination, your goal, your dream!

Well guys, I hope this has opened your eyes just a little bit about how mindset really changes your outcomes! If you enjoyed this post, please like the post, share it and follow the blog so that you are sure not to miss the next release!

As always, Thanks for reading and Go enjoy the Outdoors!
